Utopia or Oblivion

For Performa 11 Glynn presented Utopia or Oblivion, a silent movement piece based on Buckminster Fuller’s rst attempt to erect a full-scale geodestic structure in the summer of 1948 and 1949 at Black Mountain College. Exploring dynamics of collaboration and pedagogy, the piece was created through a collaborative process working with a group of movers and choreographer Laurel Atwell. Juxtaposing Fuller’s utopic architecture with the rectilinear forms of the New York skyline, three attempts were made to recreate the 50 foot geodesic dome: first on Roosevelt Island, then Times Square, and finally One New York Plaza.
