No Second Troy is exhibition loosely follows the curious history of the Gold of Troy from Homer’s Iliad to the basement of Moscow’s Pushkin Museum. The piece traces amateur archeologist Heinrich Schliemann’s quixotic quest to prove the historic truth of Homer’s Iliad, an epic poem, through an infamously destructive archaeological excavation. Surrogates of the “original” gold jewelry, vessels, and artifacts were fabricated from trash and duplicated in gold-plated bronze. Glynn’s replicas allude to both the real artifacts excavated by Heinrich Schliemann and seized by the Russians during WWII, as well as the copies commissioned by the Neues Museum in Berlin to replace the lost objects and demand their return. Themes of anonymity and the irreparable loss of war run throughout the exhibition. In a video shot on the shores of Gallipoli, the artist discards banners displaying text of the most violent fragments from the Iliad. e exhibition also included Untitled War Memorial (After Treptow), a cast concrete monument based on a pile of decaying flowers found at the Soviet War Memorial in Berlin. Interspersed throughout were works based on the material culture of Turkish emigrants to Berlin, largely left out of museums in the cities they inhabit.
